Hey everyone! The question is still asked, “which tribe should I play?” The typical answers tends to be: ‘choose the tribe that matches your personality.’ Of course most people (myself included) are still figuring themselves out…so that doesn’t really work.
Here’s a short framework to use as a guidepost.
Romans
Powerful units. If you (like power) play the Romans you’ll probably enjoy them the most…but you’ll also have to play for the entire server before you really get the most out of them. Because their units are expensive you can easily windup
Travian Palace
depressed that everyone around you have thousands of troops while you’ve got barely hundreds.
The great thing about these guys though is if you have 15,000 Praetorians (when you get there) or 15,000 Imperians fully upgraded you have a very strong army that can clear a lot of stuff. Put some EC and that’s just rad.
They key to remember is that if you’re Roman, you won’t get the thrill of the game until a few weeks into the server.
Gaul
I have a bit of a secret to reveal with the Gauls.
I’ve never played them for more than 1 month. The whole idea of raiding with Phalanx at the beginning of the game (when raiding is most important) scares me. I’ve tried it…with a lot of un-success.
From what I’ve learned and the players that I sitted for, Gaul suit people who have 9-5 jobs very well, because you can build just 5 crannies and protect 10,000 resources. Raiders also prefer to attack Teutons and Romans over Gauls because of the traps.
Frankly, I got bored when I played them for that short month… but they do have swordsmen which make great hammers. They also have the fastest unit in the game, which make great raiders.
Teutons
The funny thing about Teutons is the more I play them, the more I want to play them….but I always end up playing Roman. Does that make any sense?
I didn’t think so.
Think of Teutons they way you’d think of North American World War II tanks. In Cegep I wrote an IP paper on the Battle of the Atlantic based on the book “Why The Allies Won” (A great read!). The book, my argument and the Teutons all follow the same pattern: They win because of their numbers.
If you like having LOTS of troops that aren’t worth crap but take advantage of other players…be Teuton
If you want to have 100 – 1000 attacks going out to practically every player on the board (at little extra cost!)…be Teut.
If you want to be the first with catapults on the server and scare everyone away from attacking you…be a Teuton.
If you want to smash your troops up against Roman prats or Gaelic (Hmmm…) phalanx…be a Teuton – that’s right, you’ll probably lose the most troops, but who cares? They’re cheap – and besides, you were negative in crop anyway, they might as well die trying to kill others than from starvation!
Summary
I’ve offered you some different pointers regarding Travian than what you’ll find. There’s loads of information out there, but you don’t need to read all that much to decide.
